Huỳnh Như recently discussed the challenges of competing overseas in an interview with FIFA.
In 2022, Huỳnh Như made history by becoming the first Vietnamese female footballer to play abroad, joining Lank FC Vilaverdense in Portugal. The transition was far from easy. “Language, culture, the pace of the game—everything was new,” Huỳnh Như told FIFA. “There were moments I felt lonely.”
However, that time away from home became a crucial chapter in Huỳnh Như’s personal and professional growth. "It made me more professional," she explained. "It made me realize that with enough determination, I can adapt to any environment."
Away from the spotlight, Huỳnh Như finds peace in a simple life. Listening to music, enjoying Vietnamese food, and calling her family are small habits that help her stay grounded amid the pressures of top-level football. They also remind her of her roots and the values that continue to shape her path.
“My family taught me humility, hard work, and gratitude,” she shared with FIFA . “No matter what I achieve, I always remember where I started. That is what keeps me grounded.”
That humility has never left her, even as goals, titles, and milestones have marked a career spanning over a decade. Despite the records attached to her name, including being the nation’s all-time top scorer, Huỳnh Như still feels uneasy when all attention focuses on her.
“I don’t consider myself the best,” the 34-year-old forward said. “I am just someone who has always given my all for Vietnamese football. If there is anything to be proud of, it is that I had the chance to play alongside outstanding generations and contribute, even if just a small part, to the development of women’s football in my country.”
