The Serie A Top 4 Race: A Chaotic Battle, But Juventus Refuses to Surrender

Juventus stood just 100 seconds from a loss at the Olimpico when Federico Gatti fired past keeper Mile Svilar to pull off a remarkable 3-3 equalizer against Roma, reigniting their Champions League hopes.

In just a few days, Juventus fans have witnessed two worthy comebacks from their beloved team that deserve high praise. Although the final result was not a victory, Juve needs the spirit they displayed recently to salvage this season.

The Mentality of a Big Club

Last week, Juventus made a huge statement by scoring three goals against Galatasaray in the Champions League playoff second leg despite being a man down from the start of the second half. Had the away goals rule still applied, Juve would have achieved their first-ever comeback from a three-goal first-leg deficit in a European knockout tie. Unfortunately, they ultimately fell short, but coach Luciano Spalletti and his squad convincingly demonstrated they possess the character and strength to rise from the brink. When no one believed in them, they still believed in themselves.

The same was true in their生死战 (life-or-death clash) at Roma's stadium early this morning. A loss would have left Juve seven points behind fourth-placed Roma, making a Top 4 finish very precarious with only 11 league rounds remaining. When Donyell Malen made it 3-1 for Roma in the 65th minute, Juve was pushed into a must-fight-back situation, much like against Galatasaray. Once again, they succeeded by capitalizing on their chances. In the first half, Juventus took six shots, all off target. In the second half, they took seven shots, five on target, and scored three goals. New signing Jeremie Boga, brought on for Jonathan David to play as striker, pulled one back to make it 2-3, before Gatti equalized at 3-3 in the third minute of four added minutes.

Still without a win since February 2nd (the 3-2 victory over Galatasaray was only a consolation), Juventus has nonetheless shown glimpses of the big-club mentality needed to overcome a crisis.

Juventus Refuses to Wave the White Flag in the Serie A Top 4 Race

"A Chaotic Scramble" for Champions League Qualification

The thrilling comeback draw at the Olimpico has made the race for the Top 4 far more unpredictable for the remainder of the season. Only AC Milan (57 points) sits relatively comfortably with a nine-point cushion over fifth-placed Como. The five teams behind—Napoli (53), Roma (51), Como (48), Juventus (47), and Atalanta (45)—are now locked in a chaotic battle for the final two Champions League spots for next season. Except for Roma, the other contenders must thank Gatti's goal, particularly Atalanta, who surprisingly lost 1-2 at Sassuolo right after becoming the team that salvaged Serie A's honor in this season's Champions League.

Trailing the Top 4 by six points, Atalanta's chances are the slimmest, but their 4-1 thrashing of Dortmund last week confirms this team should never be underestimated. "The Godfather" Gian Piero Gasperini has departed, but Atalanta now possesses genuine quality. Their Champions League exploits have boosted morale immensely but also drained energy, a factor in their recent league defeat. Atalanta's upcoming schedule is also very tough. Besides two Champions League quarter-final matches against Bayern Munich, they face away trips to Lazio and Inter in Serie A, along with a match against Udinese, who beat them in the first leg this season.

In contrast to Atalanta, Juventus faces what appears to be a relatively manageable run of games against Pisa, Udinese, Sassuolo, and Genoa—opponents they have beaten this season. If they capitalize fully and win all these matches, the prospects for "The Old Lady" are significant. The reason is that both Roma and Como face greater challenges in their next four rounds. Roma meets Genoa, Como, Lecce, and Inter while also playing two Europa League quarter-final legs against Bologna. Como faces Cagliari, Roma, Pisa, and Udinese while also playing a Coppa Italia semi-final first leg against Inter tonight. The direct clash between Como and Roma in round 29 will be an opportunity for Juventus to improve their own chances, hoping that Inter will defeat Roma in round 31 and Como in round 32.

With a five-point lead over fifth-placed Como, Napoli controls its own destiny, though their recent form has been unconvincing. Nevertheless, with the return to fitness and scoring of reliable striker Romelu Lukaku, and key players like Scott McTominay, Frank Anguissa, and Kevin De Bruyne set to return soon, Napoli is unlikely to let the Champions League spot slip from their grasp.

Malen Second Only to Batistuta, Kane

Donyell Malen is becoming a new source of strength for Roma as they confidently pursue Champions League qualification. His goal in the 3-3 draw with Juventus was his sixth in Serie A since joining Roma. Historically, only the legendary Gabriel Batistuta has scored more in his first seven Serie A matches for Roma (8 goals). Among Europe's top five leagues, only another legendary striker, Harry Kane, has scored more goals than Malen since January 18th, the day Malen debuted for Roma, with Kane netting nine.
