The Australian women's team managed just a narrow win against the Philippines in their first match of the Women's Asian Cup finals, which led to significant backlash.
Despite controlling 85% of possession, the Australian women's team registered only 6 shots on target, failing to deliver the high-scoring performance many had anticipated. Although they still secured all three points, the fact that they only won 1-0 against a weaker opponent like the Philippines has raised doubts about Australia.
Australia's head coach Montemurro explained after the match: “We maintained our organization and stuck to the planned style of play. At times, that structure was crucial in helping us break down the opponent's defense. The Philippines tried to reduce the deficit, and in the end, the scoreline remained unchanged.
Creating opportunities relies on instinct and intelligence in each moment. You need a bit of composure in front of goal. Could we have done better? Absolutely. The better we handle these moments in the later stages of the tournament, the more benefits we will reap.”
For the head coach of the Philippines women's team, Mark Torcaso, the match provided lessons and reasons for pride after limiting the attacking threat from Australia.
“It's disappointing, but we can't dwell on it. We need to keep moving forward. Although the result wasn't what we wanted, this is an opportunity for us to learn and grow in the upcoming matches,” Torcaso said. “Keeping the score close and avoiding a heavy defeat is thanks to all the efforts we've put in not just over the past month, but over the last 6 months to a year.”
“To reach this point as the Philippines aims for another Women's World Cup berth, I am very proud of the players, and I know everyone back home in the Philippines is proud too. Now it's time to focus and finish strong in the next matches.”
In their second match, Australia will aim to maintain their winning momentum when they face Iran on Thursday, while the Philippines will have to confront another difficult challenge against the 2022 runners-up, South Korea.
